Chinatown was first settled by early Bostonians in the 1700s, and part of it was on a newly created tidal flat. Through several decades, what is now Chinatown was home to many different communities of newly established immigrants. The 1840s is when Chinatown’s strong Chinese community became established. The first restaurant in the area was established in 1875, and was named Hong Far Low. Population growth in Chinatown boomed post-World War two. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, manufacturing plants for garments were established in the area, creating Boston’s historical garment district. This colorful history can be seen on every corner in Chinatown. Further property developments and apartment seekers have once again transformed this area into an all inclusive vibrant and diverse area rich in character and modern and historic charm.
